Boater Accidentally Pulls Fast One On Himself After Taking On Water Near Westchester Harbor

What could have been a dramatic incident as a boater took on water on the Long Island Sound near a Westchester harbor turned into a laughable moment when it turned out there was nothing wrong with the boat and he was instead plagued by user error, authorities said.

The New Rochelle Police Department’s Harbor Unit responded to a stretch of the Sound shortly after 8 a.m. on Thursday, July 22, where there was a report of a distressed boater possibly in need of a rescue.

According to officials, the boater, who was the only one on the 31-foot Sea Ray vessel at the time, reported that he was taking on a heavy amount of water, prompting the emergency rescue operation near the New Rochelle-Larchmont border.

The rescue was not meant to be.

Instead of having to make a dramatic rescue, the boater and first responders reportedly were able to share a laugh once they realized that the cause of the water was actually a water hose attached to the boat’s engine that was improperly secure.

The boater has some cleaning up to do, but he was able to shut off the engine, tighten the hose, and his vessel was once again operational.
